Was Satan Created As An Adversary?
Hello Mike,
I need your help! Please, if you have the time, read and respond, and I will be very grateful. It’s a bit lengthy, but you’ll enjoy helping me out.
My parents and I got into a huge argument about the origins of Satan, and how Satan was never an actual angel. They have been brought up in the historical orthodox way of thinking, and believe that Lucifer was an actual Archangel who turned against God, and subsequently became Satan the devil. My mom even told me that a third of the angels in heaven were cast out for “attempting to overthrow” God, as if he were the president of a country.
I pointed out to her that Isa 14:12 was addressing the King of Babylon and not Satan. I told her that because that is the only scriptural reference to Lucifer and was addressing the king of Babylon, it was mere heresy to create a doctrine of an Archangel named Lucifer who turned against God.
I asked her to show me the scripture where a third of the angels were cast out of heaven, she told me she could find it immediately, but after about two hours, she still could not find it. She went on to say that even though she could not find it in the bible that it was in there somewhere, and was just common knowledge to Christians. She even told me to “get behind me Satan.” It was a joke of course, but nonetheless, she thinks I’m of my father the devil for not embracing the lies of Christendom.
Finally, to my question, with your expertise as well as the spirit of God that I see in you, can you give me scriptural references to show that God created Satan, and that Satan was never an angel of God. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much, Mike,
Your friend, and brother,

Hi B____,
Thank you for your question. Sure, I can show you where God created Satan as a crooked serpent at the very beginning. But I could never convince your parents of this truth. Truth is seen only by those whose eyes have been opened by Christ Himself:
Job 26:13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind:and it was so.
Gen 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
“The crooked serpent” was formed by the hand of God, not by the serpent’s own will through a rebellion against God. It was “[God’s] hand [that] formed the cooked serpent”, and He formed Him for the specific purpose of destroying what God wants destroyed, namely our flesh and its rebellious carnal mind:
Isa 54:16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Satan is not “in the flesh”, but he certainly does have a mind that is “enmity against God”, and He was created for that very purpose of being wicked and to entice us to wickedness. Once again this is plainly stated for our edification:
Pro 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
In Biblical typology, Satan appears in both the heavens and on the earth.
Eph 6:12 For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. (NLT)
Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Here we have the dragon “in heaven” fighting with “Michael and his angels”, and we are told in Ephesians 6 that we are fighting “against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms”. It is obvious that heaven is the realm where spiritual battles take place, and ‘heaven’ is not a physical planet. When the “war in heaven” is completed, Satan will be cast out and our heavens will know the peace that Christ came to give us:
Isa 54:10 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Joh 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
There is nothing on earth more precious that the peace of Christ, and knowing God and His Son! That is life itself. (Joh 17:3) The serpent that talked with Eve, as a physical type of Satan, was created on the sixth day, and he was created as a “crooked serpent” to entice Eve to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But Christ also typifies Satan and his angels as “the fowls of heaven” and as we have just seen in Ephesians 6 and Revelation 12, Satan is also in the heavens:
Mat 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
Mat 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
Who are “the fowls” who devoured the seeds which “fell by the way side”? Christ himself answers this question:
Mat 13:18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Since the fowls that fly in the heavens were created on the fifth day, we are made to understand that “the wicked one” himself was created on the fifth day as “the fowls” who typify “the wicked one [who] devoured them up [who] fell by the way side”. So there are two Biblical types of “the wicked one”. On the earth he is typified by the serpent, and in the heavens he is typified by both “the fowls of heaven” and the “great red dragon… that old serpent the devil and Satan”.
Now we know from the gospel of John that it was through Christ that all creation was accomplished:
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him [ Christ]; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
“Without Him was not anything made that was made” including the Adversary, “that Old Serpent the Devil and Satan” (Rev 12:9). According to Gen 1, the serpent was created on the sixth day with all the rest of the ‘beasts of the field’. So there are verses which tell us that God through Christ, “made all things” including “the serpent.” Look at these verses:
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
Isa 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and [there is] none else.
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
“I the Lord do all these things.” So God tells us that it was He, through Christ, who made all things. Are we to believe that God is simply telling us that it was He who created snakes and snails? No, of course not. “The crooked serpent” is Satan.
Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that [ is] in the sea.
The dragon is in the sea. The waters of the sea typify all flesh.
Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
Satan is said to be “in the sea”, not that he is the sea, as so many sometimes think.
God tells us plainly that it was His hand which formed all things including Satan. But just in case someone still thinks that Satan was first formed as a good spirit who has gone bad, we have yet another scriptural witness to the contrary for all who have been given eyes to see:
Isa 54:16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
And who is it that has come to destroy?
Joh 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it moreabundantly.
Who is it Christ tells us is the original murderer, who was created to “steal to kill and to destroy?”
Joh 8:44 Ye [You Jews which believe on me] are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
So let’s just ask the question, ‘how long has Satan been a murderer? Did he start out as a good angel who went bad, or what did Christ just tell us? What Christ has just told those with eyes to see, is: He [“Your father, the devil”] was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
The scripture your mother was looking for is:
Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
We are told in the third verse of the first chapter of Revelation that this is something that must be experienced in the lives of all in whom Christ comes to take up His residence on His throne in our hearts and minds, and we are told that it took place in type while Christ was still on this earth:
Luk 10:16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
Luk 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
Luk 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Luk 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luk 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Luk 10:21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein [including Rev 12:4]: for the time is at hand.
But your mother does not know what or where Heaven is. Read the paper that will explain it at this link:
Notice there in Luke 10, that Christ had just sent his disciples out to cast out demons, among other assignments. The fact that the demons were being cast out of heaven is what Christ was referring to when He made the statement ‘I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven’. In that very context He goes on to say:
Luk 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

There is simply no denying the Truth that Satan was a murderer from the beginning. He was “ created…[ a] waster to destroy,” and that it was “by [ God’s] spirit [ that Satan was] formed the crooked serpent.” It is all right there before the eyes of those who have been “given… eyes to see and ears to hear.” But not everyone has been given the ability to see and to hear. And you can slap a blind man in the face and point to God’s Words, and he still will not see those words. When God blinds a man, only God can heal that blindness.
So go easy on your parents and any others who cannot see “the things of the spirit.”
I hope this at least confirms to you the truth of God’s Word on this subject of the origins of Satan.
