Matt 27:10 And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
Luke 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this [fellow] perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

Mark 15:4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing?
Matt 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
John 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
John 18:32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
John 18:33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
John 18:34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
John 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

In our last study Judas gave back the silver and hung himself, representing the death of the “son of perdition”.

Matt 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
Matt 27:4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
Matt 27:5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

2Thess 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The chief priest bought a “potter’s field” with the money they paid to Judas to turn Christ over to them.

Matt 27:6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
Matt 27:7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.
Matt 27:8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
Matt 27:9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy (Zechariah) the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
Matt 27:10 And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.

The “potter’s field” is the place where strangers are buried, representing us as our old man. We all must be made into the new man, and this can only be done through the death of the old man in each of us.

Jer 18:1-10 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

We pick up our story with the chief priest taking Christ to Pilate.

Luke 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this [fellow] perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
Matt 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
John 18:29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
Luke 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and [to] the people, I find no fault in this man.

Pilate sees no fault in Christ. He could care less if he is upsetting the Jews and let’s them know it. The chief priest now has to convince Pilate that Jesus is worthy of death. This is happening within each of us daily. Our old man “the son of perdition”, “wounded to death” desires to sit on the throne where Christ is now sitting.

Rev 13:1-5 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

Here are the chief priests speaking great things and blasphemies.

Matt 27:12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders,
Mark 15:3 the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
Luke 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
John 18:30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
Matt 27:13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
Mark 15:4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing?
Matt 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
John 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
John 18:32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

Here are the scriptures that are being fulfilled now and the days to come.

Duet 21:22-23 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Psa 22:9-22 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.  Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

Pilate returns to question Jesus again. He still is not convinced that Jesus is worthy of death.

As I said earlier, this is happening within each of us daily. Christ in us is delivered up to Pilate and accused of sitting on the throne and ignoring the ways of the world. Christ in us is not of this world, and neither are we if Christ is in us.

Our next study continues with the trial of “The Christ” who will be found guilty and sentenced to death.
