Why Did God Create Satan?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hi N____,

The word ‘satan’ means ‘adversary.’ So God created Satan to be His Adversary. Satan was created at the beginning, at the foundation of the world. He wasn’t created as an afterthought to give evil some meaning or direction. God had all of our lives and all the days of all of our lives, planned and written in advance, and Satan had an integral part to play in that plan and book that God wrote long ago, before any of us existed.

Psa 139:16  Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance; And in thy book they were all written, Even the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was none of them.

As you say “Satan was created to do just what He is doing.” Satan is “an evil spirit from the Lord,” whom God sends out to incite our flesh to do evil things.

1Sa 16:14  But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
1Sa 16:15  And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Joh 13:27  And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

Where was Satan before Christ gave Judas the sop? He was right there in the heaven of Judas’s heart and mind, but Satan was restrained in that position and unable to incite Judas to go to the chief priests to sell Christ for thirty pieces of silver until Satan was given the order by God to tempt Judas with that evil thought.
So Christ’s entire crucifixion was actually, in the final analysis, “what God’s hand and God’s counsel, determined before to be done.”

Act 4:26  The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
Act 4:27  For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
Act 4:28  For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

So the answer to your question is that things do not “go wrong” unless God “determines before” that they go wrong. It is only from our point of view that events seem to go wrong. It is all in God’s plan from the beginning.

Pro 16:4  The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
Isa 45:5  I [ am] the LORD, and [ there is] none else, [ there is] no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
Isa 45:6  That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that [ there is] none beside me. I [ am] the LORD, and [ there is] none else.
Isa 45:7  I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Here is a scripture that is even clearer on the matter of Satan being created for God’s purposes.

Isa 54:16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. (KJV) … and…
Behold! I, I created the artificer who blows into the fire of coal, and brings forth an implement for his occupation. And I, I created the ruiner to harm.(CLV)

God does not need Satan to have sin and evil, else there would be no need for a “rod of iron” in the hands of God’s elect during the thousand years while Satan is sealed in prison within our fleshly carnal minds. Read this URL and get back to me if you still have questions on this subject. It is a letter entitled What and Where Is The Bottomless Pit?

I hope this helps to give you an even greater appreciation for the complete sovereignty that our Lord and His Father have, and that you are brought to know them even better.

Joh 17:3  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Your brother in Christ,
Mike
