We Can Bind and Loose Things In Heaven?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hi W____,
Thank you for your question.

You ask about the issue of binding and loosing in Mat 16:19 and 18:18?

Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Mat 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The King James is translated in such a way as to make one think that you and I are the rulers of this earth at this very moment, and God’s will concerning this earth is entirely dependent upon what you or I loose or bind. Of course that is not the case, because if it were, then Christ would never have told us “After this manner pray ye… thy will be done, in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

There is also this.

1Jn 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

Anyone who has the slightest concept of the sovereignty of God will realize the depth of the truth of this verse:

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own wil l:

So when some ‘name it and claim it’ minister tells you that Isa 45:11 is giving you the authority to tell God what to do, just know you are not hearing the voice of the true shepherd who tells you and me to ask for God’s will to be done in this earth. Here is Isa 45:11 in the King James Version, compared with a translation which gives us a much clearer understanding of what Isa 45:11 is really saying.

Isa 45:11 Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.

Here now is the much clearer God News Bible translation of this verse.

Isa 45:11 The LORD, the holy God of Israel, the one who shapes the future, says: “You have no right to question me about my children or to tell me what I ought to do! (GNB)

So now that we know who really is in charge, let’s look at the verses you ask about, and let’s see if this same Good News Bible translation, can make these verses any clearer for us.

Mat 16:19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven.

Young’s Literal Translation also gets this right.

Mat 16:19 and I will give to thee the keys of the reign of the heavens, and whatever thou mayest bind upon the earth shall be having been bound in the heavens, and whatever thou mayest loose upon the earth shall be having been loosed in the heavens.’

The New American Standard Bible also gets the right translation of this verse:

Mat 16:19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

So anything we do on earth “shall have been” already written by God in His book before any of our days ever were.

Psa 139:16 Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance; And in thy book they were all written, Even the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was none of them.

Now that is the truth of the Word of God, from Genesis to Revelation. God alone is sovereign, and even the evil that happens in this earth is His work through the instruments which He has created to perform those deeds.

Pro 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

There are those who will even tell you that God has no interest in and says nothing concerning what He is doing on this earth, but “let God be true and every man a liar”.

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

God is working every detail of this life, including the lies of every man, “after the counsel of His own will” (Eph 1:11).
Here is a rather conclusive group of verses on this subject. They are but four verses prior to verse 11 which the ‘name it and claim it’ bunch twists to their own destruction.

Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
Isa 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Do not permit some Babylonian minister to tell you that the word translated ‘evil’ here, should be ‘calamity’.
This is the Hebrew word ‘ra’. It is the same Hebrew word translated ‘evil’ in this verse:

Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

God did not create a ‘tree of good and calamity’, and neither does he ‘make wicked men for the day of calamity’. This is what He does:

Pro 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Mat 18:18 is the same as Mat 16:19. It is all “written in God’s book” long before it is done on this earth.

I hope this all helps you to see how Mat 16:19 and 18:18 should have been translated, and I hope you now see that you and I have, and all that happens in this world, has been “predestinated according to the purpose of Him who is working all things after the counsel of His own will.”

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Your brother in Christ,
Mike
