Were There Angels Before Christ?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hi M____,

Thank you for your question. You ask about Jesus before the foundation of the world, and if angels were present when God created Christ?
That question is easy to answer because the scriptures plainly state:

Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [ they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

“And He is before all things” is very clear language. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [ they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
That sounds like a slam dunk on that subject, but lest there be any doubt Christ reiterates this truth in Rev 3.

Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

The gospel of agrees with the rest of scripture:

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

The Father had decided in advance that Christ is to be preeminent in virtually everything.

Col 1:17 And he is before all thing s, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all thing s he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

God is sovereign over all His creation and does all by His will:

Dan 4:35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

Either God is working all things or He is not. He tells us that He is working all things as He see fit. We may not understand why He does things His way, but we are His creation and are in no position to be asking Him “What do you?”

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
2Ch 20:6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, [ art] not thou God in heaven? and rulest [ not] thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand [ is there not] power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
Rom 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Rom 9:16 So then [ it is] not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
Rom 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
Rom 9:18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will [ have mercy], and whom he will he hardeneth.
Rom 9:19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
Rom 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed [ it], Why hast thou made me thus?
Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

God the Father is not subject to loneliness as we are. Nevertheless He has told us that “all things were made by and for Christ,” and God is doing “all things after the counsel of His own will.” That all being true, there is no way there were any angels before Christ.
Your second question is,

Again, all I can do is quote God’s Words:

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

God the Father has no “beginning” whereas “the Word” has a beginning.

Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

But we are told that this “Word was with God and the Word was God… in the beginning.”
It is the work of the holy spirit to give you or me revelation on all things, but God has placed teachers in the body, and we are all saved by “the foolishness of preaching,” so there are a few of the verses which answer your question, if the holy spirit “reveals this unto you.”

Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Your brother in Christ,
Mike
