Study in James – Jas 1:18 “…That We Should Be A Kind of Firstfruits of His Creatures.”

[Study held by Dennis Crabtree July 7, 2017]

Jas 1:18  Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, THAT we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Last week we coverd the first part of this verse, “of His own will He begot us with the word of truth”. We covered the truth that it is the will of God that I am, I was, and that I will be what I am at all these aions of my aionian life.

Now that we are born again, we are firstfruits of God. We are like the very first fruits that are grown on a fruit tree, the first harvest of the tree. And because we are firstfruits, we have a new way of looking at things. We should now begin to see that it is the law of God that pertains to our flesh, that produces the wrath of God.

Rom 4:15 Because THE LAW WORKS WRATH: for where no law is, there is no transgression (no transgression – no wrath!).

Then we should see that the law was made for our old man, our flesh, not our new man. Our old man will experience the wrath of God because the law is given to the lawless and disobedient, which the flesh is, was, and will be.

1Ti 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
1Ti 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

NOT MADE FOR A RIGHTEOUS MAN, Not made for the resurrected Christ. We are righteous in the Christ! Christ is our righteousness, and Him being our righteousness makes me righteous in His body. Not of myself, not in my flesh, not because I am a better man than any other man, but just the opposite. Because He has shown me that I am UNRIGHTEOUS.

Rom 3:26  To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Rom 8:4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

We are in the spirit, not in the flesh, if the spirit of Christ is in us. If it is not, then we are not saved from death because we are still walking in the flesh and still thinking there is something we must do in the flesh to make ourselves right before God. Also, if the spirit of Christ is not in us, we are not firstfruits.

Rom 8:5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

To “mind the things of the flesh” is still setting our focus on things done in the flesh to either be just before God or unjust before God. But things done in the flesh are things to which the law pertains, and the law does not pertain to the spirit, that is the law of sin and death, but we are under the law of Christ. Everything done in the flesh is flesh and is therefore unrighteous, no matter how good it seems to the flesh. The following verses confirm these truths.

Rom 10:4  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Tit 3:5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Php 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Php 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Php 3:11  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

2Co 6:14  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (spirit and flesh)
2Co 6:15  And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? (walking according to the flesh or spirit)
2Co 6:16  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2Co 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, (come out from walking according to the flesh)
2Co 6:18  And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

All those things listed above pertain to my old man, my flesh. For my flesh is every one of those things, and my flesh is a ‘VESSEL OF DISHONOUR, FITTED TO DESTRUCTION”. FITTED to destruction means my flesh was created to be destroyed.

Rom 9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
Rom 9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared to glory,

My flesh was never created to live forever. It was FITTED/CREATED TO DIE so that what it housed, THE SEED OF GOD, could be made manifest or revealed after the death of the flesh. Just like the flesh of a ripe Georgia peach, once you’ve eaten it all that remains is the pit, the seed. That seed is then taken, after the flesh is CONSUMED, placed in the ground to die, and from its death comes LIFE, not another peach, but a WHOLE TREE that gives new life over and over again.

But let’s look at what “firstfruits” means. I found these scriptures that spoke of firstfruits being our inheritance in the old testament and new testament.

Eph 1:11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Eph 1:12  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Eph 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Eph 1:15  Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
Eph 1:16  Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
Eph 1:17  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: (Deu 26:3,4)
Eph 1:18  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Eph 1:19  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
Eph 1:20  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:21  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Eph 1:22  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Eph 1:23  Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

This is the new testament account of the parable of the old testament account below:

Deu 26:1  And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein;
Deu 26:2  That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name there (that place is Christ).
Deu 26:3  And thou shalt go unto the priest (Christ )that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which the LORD sware unto our fathers for to give us.
Deu 26:4  And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God.

These old testament verses are covering the verses in Ephesians. Our inheritance is not a physical land, just as the true Israel is not a physical people, but a spiritual people who are possessing a spiritual land (Gal 6:16). Not in full yet, but when we shed these physical “lands” we will possess this land in full. But again the fullness is not natural but spiritual. When these physical bodies are disolved, then Christ will have put down all rule and authority, even death, the last enemy. Then we will know as we are known.

1Co 15:24  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Co 15:25  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

1Co 13:12  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

This partial knowing of Him in our aion is the proof of the spirit of God in us, showing us Who Christ is and then who ‘the Christ’ is. None of us have this knowledge in whole, nor does just one person contain it all. But we as the Body of the Head, Christ, receive from the Head the instructions of where and when to go.  This is the “ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is  “THE earnest of our inheritance”. Knowing truth and getting the “revelation in the knowledge of HIM” in us is the beginning of our inheritance and an earnest of us BEING resurrected. We are not resurrected but are being resurrected from all the false doctrines of our land which was corrupted by spiritual wickedness in high places. This knowledge is then reciprocated by offering it back to THE ONE WHO GAVE IT – God. This is spiritually offering the first fruits back to God from our spiritual land which was given us in our spiritual inheritance in Christ Jesus, the Israel of God, in Whom the spiritual Israel of God comes through.

The whole literal nation of Israel was named after one man, Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel.

Gen 32:28  And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

So in like figure, we are called the spiritual Israel of God because we come through our Head, THE ISRAEL OF GOD. Being called the spiritual Israel of God is being firstfruits that are being resurrected, brought to life from the THE BRANCH of God.

Isa 4:2  In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

Isa 60:21  Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

Jer 33:15  In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

Zec 3:8  Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

Zec 6:12  And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

The Branch is Christ, the One Who first RESURRECTS from the earth into the heavens. Once this Branch has resurrected in us, we begin to “bloom”, or resurrect from The Branch.  The bloom, or flower that comes first before the fruit, is nourished from the sap, or spirit, of the Branch. There are many flowers that come from the Branch. But not every flower will grow into a fruit. Many flowers will shrivel away and die due to insects, disease, heat or cold. If the flower does grow into a fruit, the flower does not take credit for becoming a fruit. The flower became a fruit because of the Branch and the Spirit, or sap, of The Branch that fed the flower until it became a fruit. So it is with us. We are the firstfruits of the Branch. We are as the first flowers of the Branch that are resurrecting from Him, and if we are blessed by the Branch, we will become an edible fruit, fit for The King to eat. Now, one word unites the first part of James 1:18 to the other part, and that word is “THAT”.

“Of His OWN WILL begat us WITH the word of truth….THAT…. we SHOULD BE a kind of first fruits”. Why did He of His own will begat us? THAT we should be a kind of first fruits!! If He would not have begotten us of His word of truth, we could not be resurrected from the spiritually dead and be firstfruits to God. We would still be thinking we had a will of ourselves, separate and independent from God and able to bring spiritual gifts to God from our own free will.  And what is really cool about the word “begat” is that it means “generate”. And that is what a flower does from the Branch that wills the flower to bloom and then to produce a fruit. All are generated from the Branch, not from the fruit or flower.

“Of the Branch’s will did He generate us by the Spirit of His sap, THAT the fruit would come to be.”
