Deu 29:1 The Covenant Which He Made with Them in Horeb

[Study Aired October 8, 2021]

Deu 29:1  These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

Below are the definitions for “Moab” and “Horeb”.

Put these two definitions together in new testament language, and we have these verses.

Joh 8:41  Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

Joh 8:44  Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Gal 4:25  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

Rev 12:6  And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

While reading and re-reading over verse one, one word kept jumping out at me – “besides”. This word doesn’t mean that it replaces what was commanded them in Horeb, but something was added to what was given to them in Horeb, which means mount Sinai. I had to go to the ABP+ (Apostolic Bible Polygot w/Strongs) to find a meaning for the word.

Deu 29:1  TheseG3778 are theG3588 wordsG3056 of theG3588  covenant,G1242 whichG3739 the LORD gave chargeG1781 G2962 to MosesG* to establishG2476 with theG3588 sonsG5207 of IsraelG* inG1722  the landG1093 of Moab,G* besidesG4133 theG3588 covenantG1242 of whichG3739 he ordainedG1303 with themG1473  inG1722 Horeb.G*

Having this information and the meanings of Horeb and Moab, it is clear that what the LORD did in Moab was to add more laws and more strictness to what was already given on Mount Sinai. We know that what was given on Mount Sinai did not give freedom but enslavement, as Galatians 4:25 said, the law “genders to bondage”.

So, what was revealed brighter in Moab was what we know today – that we are “of our father” the devil. I was so blown away when I first was given this truth. I read Galatians 4:25 for years, but never saw its meaning. What I surmised was that it gendered to bondage “if I allowed it to gender to bondage”. If it was bondage to adhere to the law of God, it was bondage only to those who fell for the bondage, but if I did it out of my own free moral agency, because I loved God, it was not bondage to me. What I read was that the Israelites were in bondage because they did not do it out a willing heart but, after my 10-second sinner’s prayer, I had a willing heart.

This is why when I was first introduced to religion, I instantly said, “Well, I can do that, no problem.” This is the exact opposite of why the law was given. It was given on mount Sinai to begin the bondage process and then sealed it in the land of Moab by adding to what was already said.

What was given in Sinai brought bondage, and what was given in Moab added to that bondage by showing me that I was my father’s son, a son of the devil. New testament language explains it this way, by showing us two beasts.

Rev 13:1  And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
Rev 13:2  And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Rev 13:3  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
Rev 13:4  And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Rev 13:5  And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
Rev 13:6  And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Rev 13:7  And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Rev 13:8  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Rev 13:9  If any man have an ear, let him hear.
Rev 13:10  He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

This is what Mount Sinai was to expose, the beast I am from birth, from creation, without the knowledge of God as Creator of all things. Without that knowledge I make myself more of a beast by worshiping myself by my own so-called free moral agency, and revealing more of who and what I am, what I think of myself, “You shall be as gods, KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL.” That is an impossibility to do independently and separately from God, Who is the Creator of all things. Before that truth came to me, I was given to become this:

Rev 13:11  And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
Rev 13:12  And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him [Mt Sinai gave me the power to see myself as able to be like God], and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
Rev 13:13  And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
Rev 13:14  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Rev 13:15  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
Rev 13:16  And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Rev 13:17  And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 13:18  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

You see the beast that these verses are talking about is not an outward fornicator or an outward thief, but a religious zealot, who believes he is the greatest of all. He believes that he sits over the law and is in fact the lawgiver to the ignorant and lame. Toting around the biggest bible, making sure I am one of the first in Sunday services so I could sit right up front and let the pastor see I was taking notes. All these things were my religious badge of honor. The law did not make me see who I was. It healed me and made me into a greater monster than I already was. Listen to these verses again:

Rev 13:10  He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Rev 13:3  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death [what the law was intended to do]; and his deadly wound was healed [what my beast did with the law]: and all the world wondered after the beast.

“All the world wondered after the beast” is synonymous with what my response to the law was that said I was a sinner. “I can keep those laws, no problem” and all the world within me and all my family wondered at the change the beast had taken on. What was meant to kill me, I used to heal me. In my mind Satan, not God, had tried to kill me by enticing me to sin, and I had rejected that despicable scum and put myself back on the right track to be what God had INTENDED I should be if it were not for Satan luring me into sinful living. Now, I was back on track to where God had created me as a child, and I was bound to give God my best, and I had no doubt I could do it. If it were not for Satan pulling me down into debauchery I would have already been the apple of God’s eye. Little did I know that I had been taken by Satan through religion, and that I had been in a better place if I had never come to know organized religion at all.

2Pe 2:21  For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
2Pe 2:22  But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

You see, I thought I had come to know the way of righteousness and in thinking this I had in fact turned back to my own works, which was turning back to my own vomit. I had not been given by God to see that as Israel rose from the sea and then went on to conquer the land of Canaan, so I rose from the sea of mankind through the law of Mount Sinai and then conquered the world in me, the land of Canaan, through the laws added in Moab, “of my father” the devil.

I used what was good, and turned it into something from myself – evil. Israel rising from the sea is the first beast of Revelation 13 in the negative, and Israel given the law and sent into the land of Canaan becomes the second beast. This is our process and what we are to see about ourselves when we get religion. When the law is given to us we become the incestuous son of our father the devil, living in Moab.

Rom 7:13  Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

The law, which was good, was given to show me I was evil by nature. I used it to make myself good, not evil! It was intended for the death of the carnal mind, but I twisted it to heal the wound it had given me (“his deadly wound was healed”). God’s plan was to make me see that not only was I created marred, but that through the very thing that showed me my marring, if left to myself I would then turn that very marring into what I deemed a vessel of honor. I am so created evil that I am given to think I can change what God has created evil into good. I can eat the knowledge of what is good and what is evil. Of my own free will, I see that what the law says about me is true, but I can then turn it all around by my own choices, independent from the Creator. In my twisted way of thinking, I can make myself what God wants me to be, and I can do it because God created me with the free moral decency to do just that.

Jer 13:23  Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

Ecc 7:13  Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

I cannot change what I was created no matter how hard I try. I cannot make myself a straight snake when God has made me a crooked snake.

Job 26:13  By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

Ecc 1:15  That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

The other day I read the question, “What is freedom?” When we are given to know what we just read, that is freedom. We have freedom from worry, from crying, from pain, from regrets, because we are given to see that the crooked serpent is made crooked for a reason, and then he is remade into the image of Christ. We must first be given to see ourselves as the serpent before we can be given to see ourselves as the Christ.

Num 21:4  And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Num 21:5  And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
Num 21:6  And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Num 21:7  Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
Num 21:8  And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Num 21:9  And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Do I believe that God has created the fiery serpent that has bitten me or am I left in blindness believing it was by my own making that I made myself evil? If we are given to see that Christ is the Creator of the fiery serpent, then we can lift Him up as LORD and not ourselves.

Joh 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven [Christ is Creator, not me], even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Joh 3:14  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up [Do we lift up ourselves from the earth as the Creator and therefore must be the savior of ourselves, die for ourselves? Or do we lift Christ up as the Creator of all things and then the Savior of all, not us?]:
Joh 3:15  That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

“Whosoever believes in Christ” as Creator and Savior, lifts Him up, has aionian life in him given by His Creator Who created him crooked and then straight. He created the law to bite me and show me what I was and then created me perfect in seeing Him as LORD of the lords in my own heavens and King of the kings in my earth? I thought I ruled this earth I live in, called my body. “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness”, exposing the serpent I am, that drew me into a dry wilderness place, so when I see Christ as my LORD, Who created me who and what I am, He is then lifted up in my earth, and my earth then begins to flourish. I am healed from the serpent’s bite. One of the greatest revelations that was ever given me was that the beast of Revelation 13 is not a adulterer, a fornicator, a liar, a murderer, etc. He is a very religious person who sees himself able to do and to keep all these commandments. What the laws in Moab were designed to do was to make me twofold more a child of hell.

Mat 23:15  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

We see ourselves rising from the red sea, we see ourselves conquering the land of Canaan, yet we see it all in the power of the will of man. We quote scriptures like, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” out of Phillipians 4:13, but really what we mean is, “I can do all things with the help of Christ.” We do not see that we are helpless, without strength, without a righteous thought, let alone some strength that needs a little help from Christ. We see ourselves as a little messed up, but “With some help from Christ I can turn this whole thing around.” When arguing with a follower of this teaching, he said to me, “God did not make me a monkey, He made me a man. I have reasoning and thought to pick myself up.”

The pride in that statement is telling us where we all start. The commandments given in Moab make me twofold more a child of hell than I was on Mount Sinai. The commandments in Moab are like when I began to study the Heidelberg Catechism of the Reformed movement. I read every line, bought a dictionary to explain the words I didn’t understand from the 16th century translation of German to English. However, the more I studied, the more self-righteous I became. The more books I bought about these people’s writings explaining the bible to me, the more angry I became. I did not become Christlike, but twofold more a child of hell than when I began. Here I stood as a complete disaster of a human being, a complete and utter failure at all I had put my hand to do, and I am telling others that they are evil and I am good! My head wound had been healed, and I became worse than if I had never known the scriptures at all. Satan had whispered to me, “You shall be as God”, you shall know good and evil, and you can make yourself better and correct all that others made you do. It’s not your fault, you’re not to blame. It’s them, those evil people who are going to hell.” This is the product of religion, and this IS the plan of God for the life of an elect. You cannot be Lazarus with sores all over himself unless you see that the sores are from seeing yourself as the rich man.

Luk 16:19  There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
Luk 16:20  And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

Rev 3:17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

It is from Mount Sinai we get to see who we are inwardly, and then if that is not enough, it is repeated in the land of Moab to show us that we are the incestuous son of our father the devil. As last week’s study brought out, we cannot be Christ to anyone until we see ourselves as the Dragon.
