Daniel – Dan 2:1–23 He Reveals Deep and Hidden Things
Dan 2:1–23 He Reveals Deep and Hidden Things
[Study Aired November 8, 2021]
Dan 2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.
Dan 2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
Dan 2:3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
Dan 2:4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
Dan 2:5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
Dan 2:6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
Dan 2:7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
Dan 2:8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
Dan 2:9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
Dan 2:10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
Dan 2:11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
Dan 2:12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Dan 2:13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
Dan 2:14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:
Dan 2:15 He answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
Dan 2:16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
Dan 2:17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
Dan 2:18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
Dan 2:19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
Dan 2:20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
Dan 2:21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
Dan 2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
Dan 2:23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
Chapter 1 of Daniel shows us that we are called and chosen before the foundations of this world to be a people without blemish, well favored and skillful in all wisdom. These attributes are what will qualify us to serve in our king’s palace.
Dan 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
Dan 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
The Chapter also shows us the way to make our calling and election sure. It is through the drinking of water and simultaneous denial of ourselves of the king’s meat and wine which represent the false doctrines of worldly wisdom.
2Pe 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
2Pe 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
2Pe 1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
We are admonished to be established in the present truth which is being revealed to us through what every joint supplies. This was what Daniel and the three Hebrew young men did to make their election sure. The four Hebrew men asked to eat only pulse and drink water. The pulse here according to Strong means something sown. So, pulse signifies food which is not of fleshly origin. Thus, pulse denotes the word of God, just as water to drink also means the word of God. The fact that the Hebrew men were four in number is to tell us that all of God’s elect in every generation must deny themselves of these false doctrines of worldly wisdom and depend only on water which is the word of God.
Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Dan 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
Today’s study of Chapter 2 is to emphasize the point that it is those who deny themselves the king’s meat and wine, and focus on drinking the water of the word, who are given the ability to understand deep and hidden things of God. The religions of this world, including Christianity symbolized in Chapter 2 by astrologers, magicians, sorcerers and Chaldeans, are not given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Mat 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Mat 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Dan 2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.
The name Nebuchadnezzar means “May Nebo protect the crown”. Nebo is a god of the Babylonians. This Nebo is another Jesus in whom we come to put our confidence by thinking that He will ensure we are crowned while in Babylon. As the word of God says, this Nebo is another Jesus who is a burden to the weary soul, which is us while in Babylon, and as a result, we become worse off.
Isa 46:1 Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast.
2Co 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is one of the things our Lord uses to show who His elect are. The fact that it was the second year of his reign means that this dream is established and will surely be a reality. Remember, the number two signifies a witness.
2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
The dream troubled Nebuchadnezzar’s spirit, and he could not sleep. This is to confirm to us that it is the Lord who controls the hearts and minds of all humanity and directs it as He wills. Sometimes we become restless over an issue, and it is all part of the ways of the Lord to bring to our attention our frailty so that we depend on Him more.
Pro 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
On a positive note, Nebuchadnezzar here represents our Lord Jesus. The dream of Nebuchadnezzar therefore represents what is on the mind of Christ. As we can see later, it is God’s elect who have the mind of Christ and therefore can know our Lord’s mind or His dream.
1Co 2:16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Dan 2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
As indicated earlier, the magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans symbolize Babylon which represents the religions of this world, including Christianity. Since it is impossible to know the mind of Christ if we are not called and chosen as His elect, our Lord raises this controversy of a dream by Nebuchadnezzar to manifest those who are approved of God.
1Co 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Dan 2:3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
Dan 2:4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live forever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
The Chaldeans’ request for the king to tell them the dream before they can interpret shows that they do not know the ways of the king, who in this case is our Lord Jesus Christ. From the scriptures, we know that our Lord loves to hide a matter so that we who are being trained to become kings will search it out and find it. That is God’s modus operandi.
Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Searching matters out takes time, and therefore it is a process God uses to inculcate in us several of His attributes so that we become like Him. Salvation is a long process which requires patience and faith. Our brothers and sisters in Babylon, on the other hand, think otherwise. They think that a ten-second prayer guarantees salvation. The king’s meat, or the false doctrines we imbibe while in Babylon, do not bring about faith. This is because faith only comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Thus, being starved of the word of God in Babylon means that we automatically lack faith.
Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
As we are aware, faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. It is through the word of God that we become convicted of things not seen. We are therefore able to wait with patience on our Lord Jesus to reveal to us what is on the Lord’s mind, which is symbolically Nebuchadnezzar’s dream.
Rom 8:24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?
Rom 8:25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Dan 2:5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
Interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s dream means understanding the ways of the Lord. Our inability to have the mind of Christ means that we cannot interpret Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, which means we cannot know our Lord’s ways. Being unable to know the ways of our Lord means we shall suffer loss on that day!! In verse 5, being cut in pieces means that our flesh must be destroyed before we can be given the mind of Christ to interpret His ways. Our houses being made a dunghill signifies that our flesh or our carnal mind is a heap of dung or refuse of false doctrines. These false doctrines must be cleansed from our heavens or dumped before we are given the opportunity to have the mind of Christ.
Heb 9:23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Heb 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Dan 2:6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
What this verse is saying is that if we have the mind of Christ, through understanding of the word of God, then we can interpret His ways. This is what will eventually bring us reward and great honor. The gifts and rewards and great honor are the joy that is set before us which we must strive to attain.
Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Again, here the king represents our Lord Jesus Christ. He knows for certain that the Babylonians cannot know what is on His mind because it is not given to them to know. However, as highlighted earlier, this whole incident was created by the Lord to let us know those who have been approved of the Lord. We have had our fair share of this controversy when some of our brothers and sisters departed from our fellowship.
1Co 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Verse 9 makes us aware that those in Babylon are deceived because of the prepared lying and corrupt words spoken before the Lord by their messengers. As stated in the verse, this deception will continue until the time is changed; that is, until this present age has ended. What king Nebuchadnezzar told the astrologers, sorcerers, magicians and the Chaldeans about them preparing lying and corrupt words to speak before him is the same as what our Lord said about the prophets in Jerusalem as follows:
Jer 23:14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
The Chaldean response to the king that there is no man on earth that can tell him the dream is true. Indeed, no man with a carnal mind can tell him the dream. It is only those with the mind of Christ who can do that. Telling Nebuchadnezzar that no king, Lord or ruler requests such a thing from his people is the same as what the man with one talent accused Jesus of.
Mat 25:24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
Those who are not privileged to know the Lord in this life think our Lord is not considerate in His demand. They think our Lord is asking more than He should. It is all because those who do not have the mind of Christ think that salvation is based on their effort. This is the Lord’s response to such thoughts of God being a hard man:
Rom 9:19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
Rom 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
Rom 9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
Rom 9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
The statement that no man on earth can show the king his dream and that it is only gods whose dwelling is not with flesh who can do that is to let us know that no man after the flesh can know the mind of Christ. It is only the elect who are gods, as proclaimed by the Lord, who can know the mind of Christ.
Psa 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
To be a god is to speak the words of Christ which are the truth.
Exo 4:10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.
Exo 4:11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
Exo 4:12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
Exo 4:13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.
Exo 4:14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.
Exo 4:15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
Exo 4:16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.
We, the elect, are gods, and only we can say what Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is and also interpret it. That is, we are the ones who know the mind of Christ and know His ways. The statement in verse 11 also stated that God’s dwelling is not with flesh. Yes, we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus; that is where our dwelling is. We do not put our confidence in the flesh!
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Dan 2:12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Dan 2:13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
Within each of us, Babylon representing all the false doctrines we have imbibed, is being burned out of us. Externally, the destruction of Babylon is an impending event waiting to happen. Since men do not know the difference between the elect and those in Babylon, we, the elect, may be harassed during Babylon’s destruction, but our Lord will deliver us just as He delivered Daniel.
Rev 18:5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Rev 18:6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Rev 18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
Rev 18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
Rev 18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
Rev 18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
It takes time to gain the mind of Christ. As the fire of the word burns all chaff from our heavens, we gradually get to know the mind of Christ. The cleansing of our minds to have the mind of Christ is this war in our heavens signified by Michael and his angels fighting against the devil and his angels. We shall surely overcome by the blood of the lamb, the word of our testimony and not loving our lives even unto death.
Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Rev 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Rev 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
When we come together with one mind to pray about an issue or request which is in line with the will of God, our prayers have the power to accomplish much. This is what our Lord says:
Gen 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
Jas 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
That was what Daniel did as the three Hebrew men together with Daniel raised their voices to heaven to deliver them by revealing the dream of Nebuchadnezzar. When the disciples were under persecution from the chief priest and the elders, they raised their voices in prayer, and the building they were in shook, signifying the awesome power of their prayers to move every mountain or obstacle.
Act 4:23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
Act 4:24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Act 4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
Act 4:30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
Act 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
The principle we need to know here about praying together is that one chases a thousand, but two put ten thousand to flight.
Deu 32:30 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?
Dan 2:19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
For the sake of the Lord’s elect, nothing that is hidden shall remain a secret. Our Lord is willing to grant us access to the mysteries of the kingdom. As the word of God says, it is our Lord’s glory to conceal a matter, and it is His joy when we come searching out the matter!!
Luk 8:17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
Jer 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Dan 2:20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
When we are given to know Christ, we cannot help but give Him the praise and adoration He deserves. That is what all the elect do as they come to see His wonderful plan of salvation and for including us in His plan. We all cannot help but fall on our faces and worship God in admiration. In fact, our God is an awesome God!
Rev 7:11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
Rev 7:12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
The Bible defines wisdom as the fear of the Lord. The statement ”for wisdom and might are his” is to remind us that we do not play a part in coming to fear the Lord. Our salvation is wholly dependent upon our Lord. The fear of the Lord, or wisdom and understanding, grows over time as we get to know our Lord Jesus more through what every joint supplies.
Job 12:12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
Job 12:13 With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
Job 12:16 With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.
Dan 2:21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
‘He changes the times and seasons’ is another way of saying that there is a season and a time for everything which God does under heaven. As His children we are admonished not to be anxious about times or seasons since our God is fully in control of what happens to us.
Act 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
He removes kings and sets up kings to remind us that all power is ordained of God. If that is so, then resisting powers that be is resisting Christ.
Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Rom 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
Giving wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the understanding is the same as saying that he who has will be given more.
Dan 2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
The deep and secret things here refer to the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. He knows what is in the darkness, and ‘the light dwells with him’ is another way of saying that both darkness and light are alike to Him. In other words, God makes use of both good and evil to accomplish His purpose.
Psa 139:12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
Dan 2:23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.
When we look at all God is doing on our behalf, the resources that He has made available to us and His tender mercies and love, we cannot help but join the cloud of witnesses in saying:
Rom 11:33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Rom 11:34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
Rom 11:35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
Rom 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
