Parents and Children

by Victor Torres

Parents should teach their kids to obey them and God, to do what is right and fair.

Gen 18:19 I have chosen him (Abraham) in order that he may command his sons and his descendants to obey me and to do what is right and just. If they do, I will do everything for him that I have promised.

[Bible character recognition]

ABRAHAM was a good example of a parent. He taught and commanded his kids and grandkids to obey God and to do what is right and just.

[Interaction – ask the kids if they know who Abraham is, if they don’t, prepare a short story about who Abraham is and teach it to them after this lesson]

[Interaction – vocabulary words. What do the words ‘descendants’ and ‘just’ mean?]

[Answer: descendants – a child or grandchild; ‘just’ means fair, or doing what our parents told us]

[Interaction: moral lesson. If we obey God, He will _______ us.]
[Answer: Reward]

While Abraham is a good example of a parent, ELI is a bad example of a parent.

Eli and his family did not respect God, so they got punished.

1Sa 3:12 I will punish Eli and his family, just as I promised.
1Sa 3:13 He knew that his sons refused to respect me, and he let them get away with it, even though I said I would punish his family forever [for the ages, for a very long time].

[Interaction: fill in the missing letters: A _ _ _ _ _ _ is a good example of a parent, while E _ _ is a bad example of a parent.]

If daddy or mommy sees you doing something bad, and they don’t tell you it’s wrong and discipline you, God will be angry at them. God doesn’t punish us forever. When He sees that we are sorry for what we have done or said, then He will stop punishing us and will comfort us. That is what dad or mom does to us when we behave badly, they spank us but it’s only after a while. When we tell them we are sorry, they give us a hug and a kiss.

Isa 57:16 I gave my people life, and I will not continue to accuse them or be angry with them forever.

Good parents are told by God to correct their kids. If your mom or dad corrects you, it means they love you.

Pro 13:24 If you love your children, you will correct them; if you don’t love them, you won’t correct them.
Pro 13:25 If you live right, you will have plenty to eat; if you don’t live right, you will go away empty.

[Interaction: moral lesson: If we don’t obey our parents, God will ________ us.
Answer: punish]

It is very important that parents teach their kids when they are young.

Pro 22:6 Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.

2Ti 3:15 and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

[Interaction: TRUE or FALSE: Parents must teach their kids when they are old? Answer: False]

[Interaction: What does the Holy Scriptures mean? Answer: the Bible]

We need to teach our kids regularly and be a good example to them:

Here are some of the things that parents must teach their children regularly starting when they are young.

The Bible.
Work hard in everything, including their homework and household chores.
Never cheat on their tests or tell lies.
What TV shows or movies to watch or not to watch, or what video games to play or not to play.
Be respectful to all people, not only to grown-ups, but also to other kids.
Be kind and gentle to everyone and not to have a fight with anyone.

Christ is a great example of being an obedient child

Luk 2:51 Jesus went back to Nazareth with his parents and obeyed them. His mother kept on thinking about all that had happened.

It also makes God happy when children obey their parents

3Jn 1:4 Nothing brings me greater happiness than to hear that my children are obeying the truth. (The truth is Christ and the Bible)

[Interaction: Ask your kids how they get rewarded when they do the right things. Example is giving them money or taking them to an ice cream shop or the store to buy treats]

Col 3:20 Children must always obey their parents. This pleases the Lord.

[Interaction: Multiple choice: Children must obey their parents a) sometimes b) most of the time or c) all the time? Answer: c – all the time.]

[Interaction: vocabulary: Please. What does the word please mean in Col 3:20?
Answer: to make happy]

We need to tell them and/or spank them if they are doing or saying something wrong.

Pro 22:15 Children just naturally do silly, careless things, but a good spanking will teach them how to behave.

[Interaction: Parent asking children: If I correct you when you do silly or careless things, will God be angry or happy with me?]

Eph 6:4 Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, raise them with Christian discipline and instruction.

[Interaction: What does Christian mean? It means you are a follower of Christ]

Eph 6:1 Children, you belong to the Lord, and you do the right thing when you obey your parents. The first commandment with a promise says,
Eph 6:2 “Obey your father and your mother,
Eph 6:3 and you will have a long and happy life.”

[Interaction: repeat main moral lesson: If we obey God and our parents, we will be rewarded. If we disobey them, we will get punished.]

[After our kids’ bible study tonight, we had a lively discussion on evolution, and Mike referred to a couple of websites that are helpful to expose the theory of evolution as the lie that it is. We want to be clear though that that is the only part that we endorse, and not any of their other doctrines.

Evolution of a Creationist – the distinct differences between evolution and creation.
Institute for Creation Research

I plan to do a kids’ bible study on the creation that will touch upon this topic and also an introduction to the bible. If you can think of any topic that you would like to teach our kids, please email them to me. Also, I would like to ask the body for suggestions of good movies, books, video games, board games for kids.]
