Deu 7:1 What is a Girgashite

Deu 7:1  When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

What is a Girgashite? That's today's study, to find out what this literal tribe of people means to us spiritually. What is it and where did we learn it?

First, we know from scripture that the Girgashites are from Canaan, the son of Ham, the son of Noah, who looked upon His father's nakedness.

1Ch 1:8  The sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
1Ch 1:9  And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raamah, and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.
1Ch 1:10  And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be mighty upon the earth.
1Ch 1:11  And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,
1Ch 1:12  And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (of whom came the Philistines,) and Caphthorim.
1Ch 1:13  And Canaan begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth,
1Ch 1:14  The Jebusite also, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

So, like the Hittites, the Girgashites come from Canaan, the son of Ham, and the Israelites were taking over the land of Canaan. The definition for Girgashite from Brown, Driver, Briggs is;

H1622
גּרגּשׁי
girgâshı̂y
BDB Definition:
Girgashite or Girgasite = "dwelling on a clayey soil"
1) descendants of Canaan and one of the nations living east of the sea of Galilee when the Israelites entered the promised land.
Part of Speech: adjective
A Related Word by BDB/Strong's Number: patrial from an unused name [of uncertain derivation]

This an excerpt from "References.com" on different soils;

From this definition we learn that the Girgashites "dwell on a clayey soil". We should all know that the clay represents our flesh.

Job 10:8  Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.
Job 10:9  Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

Jer 18:4  And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

Isa 64:8  But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

From all three of these verses that describe our flesh comes the definition of the word clay;

H2563
חֹמֶר
chômer
kho'-mer
From H2560; properly a bubbling up, that is, of water, a wave; of earth, mire or clay (cement); also a heap; hence a chomer or dry measure: - clay, heap, homer, mire, motion, mortar.
Total KJV occurrences: 31

I don't know how many of you have ever tried to dig into clay soil or to plant a garden in clay soil, but it's very difficult, especially when the clay is dry and hard. The clay soil is so compact that it is also impossible to penetrate. When it gets wet it is so sticky and gooey that you can't do anything with it. So, a Girgashite is a people who dwelt on clay soil. So what does it mean to "dwell" on clay soil? We know that the word "dwell" means to live there, stay there, be stuck on something. If I continue to think on something someone has done wrong to me I get told, "stop dwelling on it". So a Girgashite dwells on the clay, on the flesh.

We are taught from birth to dwell on the flesh, to think on how to or how not to do things. We are encouraged to study the way of the flesh through Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, nature, science, or Geology, any and all things concerning the relation of it to the flesh. Mankind left to himself never gets beyond the physical. He never by his own thoughts looks up. Our eyes are positioned to look forward but not up. It has been given to the flesh to look at fleshly things and not spiritual things. This is what a Girgashite is. It's any doctrine which has you looking at yourself and not at your Creator for the answers. Everything that comes from the adversary says to look at ourselves for the answers, "you can do it", "you have the power", "buck up and be a man", or "you shall be as gods". This what a Girgashite doctrine does. But the truth of our Creator says this:

Gen 15:1  After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

"I thy Shield, thy exceeding great reward." Our Creator Jesus Christ is speaking to Abram, to us, BEFORE we become Abraham, "father of a multitude", before we become fruitful like the name of the river Euphrates.

Gen 15:2  And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

"I (we) go childless and the steward of my (our) house is this "Eliezer of Damascus". Eliezer means "God of help", not "God in total control", but god of help. This is why The LORD tells him in the first verse, "fear not", because Abram (we) think God is here to help us, give us a little strength that we need, and we will do the rest - a doctrine of the Girgashite. "I go childless in any semblance of You, all I have is this flesh which You can help me make the best of it." As if the flesh has something to offer God.

Gen 15:3  And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Gen 15:4  And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

He tells us that this slave to the flesh, Eliezer, is not the heir. The heir is Christ Himself, the Seed which shall be born from a virgin doctrine that shall be the heir, and that Seed is Christ Himself Who is growing daily inside each and every Elect of God.

Gen 15:5  And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

"So shall thy Seed accomplish", one of the meanings of the word "be" - H1961. The Seed will accomplish the total redemption of every person who has ever lived and every spirit which has ever been created. That Seed is growing in the bowels of the Elect, in their inner man, and that Seed shall unite together, as the cells unite together to make up a child in the womb of its mother. That Seed will then save all mankind after they themselves have been through the darkness themselves.

Gen 15:6  And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Gen 15:7  And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

This word "GIVE" is H5414 and also means "to deliver". He is telling us that the Seed in us is predestined to inherit everything. He is making a covenant with the Seed in us, Christ, which that Seed in us will inherit, bring to life all the stars of the heaven, all the people that have ever come from the creation of Christ.

Gen 15:8  And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
Gen 15:9  And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
Gen 15:10  And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

The heifer represents our molded thoughts of our god, our molten images inside ourselves;

Hos 13:2  And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves (this word 'calves' is the same word heifer-H5697).

The she-goat represents our sacrifices to God in ignorance, but our ignorance is judged, the number three showing this process.

Num 15:27  And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering.

The ram represents all the strength we think we possess and also is judged; the definition for a ram is H352 and its definition is, "From the same as H193; properly strength; hence anything strong; specifically a chief (politically); also a ram (from his strength); a pilaster (as a strong support); an oak or other strong tree: mighty(man), lintel, oak, post, ram, tree."

Exo 15:15  Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men (H352-ram) of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

The turtle dove and young pigeon represent all that must die that has leprosy in us. We must see that we are vile to the smallest corner of our very being.

Lev 14:30  And he shall offer the one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, such as he can get;
ev 14:31 Even such as he is able to get, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, with the meat offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed before the LORD.

Gen 15:11  And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

The fowls represent all the unclean thoughts we get from the flesh and the enemy (2Co 10:5). These thoughts descend in "you're not an Elect, look what you've done", "you're not saved, look at what you just thought", "there are so many better people out there, why would God waste His time on you." I could go on and on about the fowls which encircle my heavens. These thoughts are the very thing that God allows the enemy to buffet me with, because the more I am buffetted, the stronger I get. Just like Samson going around and around on the wheat grinding wheel, his hair grew back, and he became strong. When he has time to get stronger and the fowls kept buffeting him, he finally gets the victory over them (Jdg 16:21-31).

Gen 15:12  And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

This deep sleep and horror represents what happens when we begin to know the truth. First, we are put into a deep sleep by the LORD, and we begin to get slothful on doctrines of "once saved always saved", "Jesus paid for it, why worry", etc.

1Sa 26:12  So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.

But these times of deep sleep are necessary, for it is from this deep sleep and sin the church is created as the very thing that destroys the flesh, negatively AND positively! First the negative: the word used here for "rib or ribs" is only translated "rib or ribs" twice in all of scripture. Mostly it is translated "side".

Gen_2:21

Job 18:12  His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

We are first brought to hunger by the flesh. We grope in darkness for comfort from our life, then we are given comfort in the form of a woman in darkness, a Babylonian church which enslaves us into years of harsh labor until we are brought to the knowledge of the whole of our condition, the serving for 400 years, the fullness of our Amorites.

Gen 2:21  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
Gen 2:22  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. (He takes and gives us what we want, flesh from our flesh, a church after our making, a church with which we feel as one)
Gen 2:23  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Gen 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Gen 15:13  And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
Gen 15:14  And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

That nation in us which will be judged is the flesh. We, the seed of God, are enclosed after the false church is taken from us. That false church then enslaves us for a symbolic 400 hundred years until we see our total iniquitous self-righteousness in making our own church. This is the iniquity of our Amorites. Then in our symbolic fourth generation we will be released in death. The name "Amorite" describes what we do, what we are and what we think about our own self-righteous works. It means "publicity". This is what we want from the world. We want the credit for all that we do. We want to be known by all for what we do for anyone else and for all our good works. This is the Amorite spirit; publicity for our works. The purpose of this is God's way of showing us that all things come from Him, not us, and all things were created for God, not us, and all things consist by God, not us. When we have come to this "fullness of the Amorites", we will  "come out from her" (Rev 18:4) and be the church to our Creator, Christ.

Gen 15:15  And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
Gen 15:16  But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
Gen 15:17  And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

When the iniquity of the Amorites is full, Christ, the burning lamp, passes between the pieces of what I thought was mine, the iniquity of the Amorite and what we now see as His. In this day, the Day of the LORD, we are given a covenant from God that we are His people, and we are shown what we will possess, the land of the Girgashite, the clay, our flesh. The flesh is then brought into subjection to the will of God in knowledge, and we confess that all that we were, are and will be was from the hand of our Creator. The enslavement came when we thought it was of our own creation, our own rib. The fullness of the Amorite occurs when we see ourselves fully as being emptied of anything that we think or can image as ours. This takes a lifetime, a lifetime of Christ going through our land and finding all the inhabits of our land hiding in the rocks and caves, male, female, small, young or old. All the doctrines we thought were ours will be cut in two and will be passed between by THE BURNING LAMP, each sacrifice at a time. From our molten heifer images, our she-goat of sacrifices in ignorance, our Ram which we think is our own power and all the way down to the smallest sacrifices which we thought would clean us from our unclean leperous condition - all will be purged as sacrifices for the whole of the Amorites in us.

Gen 15:18  In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
Gen 15:19  The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
Gen 15:20  And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
Gen 15:21  And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

"Unto the great river Euphrates." And Euphrates means "fruitful". We are brought from Egypt (H4714 - from the root H4693) and a place of limitations to Euphrates (H6578), a place where we "break forth" as Abram became Abraham - a "father of a multitude". This is why I told you earlier in the study that Christ has become, "I thy Shield, thy exceeding great reward." Our Creator Jesus Christ is speaking to Abram, to us, BEFORE we become Abraham, "father of a multitude", before we become fruitful like the name of the river Euphrates. The name of Abram is limited like Egypt until he becomes Abraham, fruitful like Euphrates and burst forth into the promised land. Girgashite doctrine is part of the limitation doctrines to which our rib has enslaved us, to serve her instead of her serving us. We were not serving Christ but our own bellies in the doctrines of the Girgashites.

Next week , LORD willing, we will cover more about our publicity doctrines in the Amorites.
