Deuteronomy - Deu 4:15-20 Take Heed...Lest Ye Corrupt Yourselves

Deu 4:15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Deu 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
Deu 4:17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
Deu 4:18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Deu 4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.
Deu 4:20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

This first verse is the foundation for the other verses. It is the reason the other verses even exist. God did not show Himself to the literal Israelites. They did not see any similitude of any kind of God literally. However, the fact that they did not see a spiritual similitude of God is in fact the witness against their/our flesh. Let's look at the word similitude.

The definition shows that it means any portion or partial likeness of ANY KIND. This word is not just saying, "You did not see any image." It is saying, "You did not see any partial likeness of any kind that resembles the LORD God." This is significant in two ways. One: in the literal as no man can see The LORD God in ANY WAY that will lead Him to be able to make a partial, smallest image of God in any way, that will lead him as a literal fleshly being to worship God IN TRUTH.

Let me say this again. No man can see God in the slightest form spiritually or physically, while still in the fleshly first Adam, and worship God with clarity and truth. No man, in either song, poem, riddle, vision or dream can intelligently and in truth worship God without God Himself revealing Himself to that person through His WORD. If any person were able to see the LORD God in the MINUTEST, SLIGHTEST FORM, separately from His WORD, he could claim that there was something in mankind which could see God separately and independently from God Himself. That man can reach God and know His thoughts WITHOUT THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN CHRIST (Rom 8:9), Who opens our eyes. If that is the case, then all religious claims that they know God could have truth to them. This is the lie of the man of sin and the reason we have countless gods and religions in the world. Now let's read some verses which use this word similitude or its other translated words;

Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Job 4:16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

Num 12:8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

Each one of these verses brings out the definition of the word in discussion. Also, each one of these verses either warns of trying to make an image of God or the speaker has been blessed by God to see what He was speaking, which is an image. Seeing something of TRUTH and KNOWING what you have seen in truth is a gift from God. It is not something a person can accomplish on his own separately and independently from God as a mere man. This takes us to the most controversial statement that we claim, "We, the Elect, are the Body of Christ, which is the image of the God of scripture. We and we alone, from the resurrection of our Head, Jesus Christ, along with all those who have ever known God in truth through the revelation of Jesus Christ, are the images through which God has decided to show Himself to the world." The Body of Christ, the church, will be the image, the similitude and the likeness that will lead all men to truth in the lake of fire.

Col 1:15 Who is the IMAGE of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, THE CHURCH: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Eph 3:21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
Eph 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Let's put these three sets of scriptures together. Christ is the Image of God the Father, and we are Christ's Body. It is through this Head that His Body reveals to the rest of mankind and spirits the manifold wisdom and plan of God. The Body of Christ, which includes all those who are now asleep in Christ that will one day be united as a whole Body and will be used by God The Father through the Head of the Body, Jesus Christ, to reveal Himself to His creation. No man or woman who has ever lived, who are not in this Body, has not, nor can, see God as He is, was and will be. They cannot see any likeness, similitude or image of God without being enlightened by The mind of Christ.

Joh 8:53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Joh 8:54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
Joh 8:55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
Joh 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

Joh 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Joh 10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
Joh 10:35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
Joh 10:36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

All the world says this to us when these words are spoken to them. Their response will be the same, "Who do you think you are?" In the flesh we see a god that only our carnal minds are given to see, a god that is like us and acts the way we do, talks the way we do and makes excuses for what we are in the flesh. It is a god of our carnal mind, and his name is whatever our name is in the flesh. Scripture calls him the man of sin, which is you, me and every other human that has ever walked this earth. The scripture says that we saw no similitude, and this goes much deeper than just making a physical carving or statue. When we imagine what we will say to others in a situation, what they will say to us, then our response to them, we are making a similitude. We do not know the future and cannot plan out the responses of others or our own responses. When we put ourselves in this back and forth in our minds about our responses, basically arguing with ourselves, and IMAGINING the conversation or events, we are making an IMAGE, the root for imagining, of God. Imagining an event or conversation and the way it will play out is making yourself God and directing the future, an impossibility for any human to do. Even if the imagining is for the natural good of others or for myself, it's still corruption from a carnal mind that is enmity against God (Rom 8:7).

Deu 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

Can we see the deeper meaning of this verse, inwardly, spiritually? "Lest you corrupt yourselves." The corruption comes from inside us, from what we are, children of the devil, who believe that we know the difference between good and evil. We know how the events of life will play out, and we know what's going to happen. In doing so, we are making the similitude we never saw, we are making God into man (Gen 3:5).

Deu 4:17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,

Who is the beast upon the earth of which we make an image? We are the beasts.

Ecc 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

Who and what is the winged fowl that fly in the air?

Mat 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

THE WICKED ONE is Satan, and we are his children and therefore we are our wicked one that catches away what was sown in our hearts. It is snatched away because the heart in which the seed is sown is WICKED;

Deu 15:9 Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.

It is the imaginations of our wicked hearts that create an image of a thought, a fowl of our air. We are to never take thought of the day because our thoughts are vain.

Mat 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Mat 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

Jas 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Jas 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Jas 4:15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
Jas 4:16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Jas 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Deu 4:18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

What creeps upon the ground, and what is creeping upon the ground? This is what crawls or creeps upon the ground of which ground we are:

Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

So if Satan moves upon the ground and we are the ground, what does the creeping which he does signify? Creeping is the same thing as being crafty, being stealthy, or moving with slow methodical purpose. A rock is made from the dust of the ground, and we are rocks or stones (1Pe 2:5). So this is what creeping is; Satan methodically and purposely moving upon us to deceive us into worshiping ourselves as his children.

Pro 30:19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

To build an image of anything that creeps upon the ground is still an image of ourselves.

What is the fish in the waters beneath the earth of which we are not to make an image?

The waters are all of mankind and they are beneath the earth of their mother the harlot, the religions of the world.

Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

See how the waters are beneath her? She symbolizes all the religions of the dust, mankind, earth.

Jer 22:29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.

We are the fish that swim in that sea of mankind;

Jer 16:15 But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.
Jer 16:16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

Mat 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

Deu 4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

Again, who are the sun, moon and stars that we are driven to worship? It's us again, worshiping ourselves, making an image of the beast.

Rev 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

Gen 37:9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
Gen 37:10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Israel knew that when his son, Joseph, had the dream of the sun, moon and stars that it represented them. Having this thought we can see that we as individuals believe that we are the radiance of the sun, we have all the answers as the church, and all should humble themselves before me to listen to my great wisdom. Everything that exists inside us is created by God for the destruction of the old man Adam and the formation of the new man Christ within us. But we as the man of sin, the Babylonian church and the light of all stars of wisdom, think we radiate the light of all knowledge in the sun, moon and stars. We contain it in ourselves and if all would just bow down to us we could teach them a thing or two.

We also believe that we are the directing light of God, the directing light of the church and all forms of lights within ourselves. We need not anyone to inform us about what is best for our life because we rule within our life and direct our own steps. I fashion my human understanding into an image of man and worship it. So we can see that these verses are much deeper than just the natural understanding of the literal words. We can see by the enlightenment of the Spirit within us that the true image is our IMAG-INATION. We can clearly see that what we image is our downfall. This is why we are told to cast down all images - imaginations.

2Co 10:5 Casting down imag-inations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
2Co 10:6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Pro 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Pro 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

The Spirit of God took the literal images and made them inward for us to see that the literal must come first, then the spiritual (1Co 15:46). I pray that the Spirit of God in us exposes all the images and imaginations we have and we are given the power to cast them down.

Deu 4:20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

Our last verse gives us hope in allowing us to see that having these similitude of idols in us was when we were in Egypt, still in the world inside ourselves, which the LORD calls the iron furnace. He is delivering us from this world of confusion and self-worship which changed daily as we built more images. He has delivered us and is delivering us from the worship of self into the worship of the Only True God and King. We are not God, we are not LORD. He ALONE directs our steps, from birth to death.

Pro 16:9 A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Psa 139:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Psa 139:16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

The conclusion is simple. We make an image not only in reality, as a statue, but we make an imagination of God from our carnal minds, and that is the deeper meaning of "you saw no similitude", so don't think you can make one. But that is exactly what we all do. From Adam to the last human that is born into flesh, we all imagine what God is, what He desires, and we build this IMAGE through VAIN human thoughts that are led by sinful flesh.

Next week, LORD willing, we will continue our study of Deuteronomy 4:21-24.
