Deuteronomy – Deu 21:15-17 What Does the Double Portion Mean in Scripture?

Deu 21:15  If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
Deu 21:16  Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:
Deu 21:17  But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

When I first read these verses my mind went to straight to Ishmael and Esau. Ishmael was the first born from the loins of Abram.

Gen 16:3  And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
Gen 16:4  And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Gen 16:15  And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

Esau was the first born out of the womb of Rebekah and from the loins of Issac.

Gen 25:21  And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
Gen 25:22  And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
Gen 25:23  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
Gen 25:24  And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
Gen 25:25  And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
Gen 25:26  And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
Gen 25:27  And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Gen 25:28  And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

The flesh always contributes a double portion as a good thing for the flesh but the double portion does not always mean a good thing for the flesh. The word double obviously means “two”.

Our minds usually go to the positive application in the double portion, but there is also a negative application which applies, and this is what this study is about because there are two wives involved. When there is only one wife, the application is obvious because the wife represents one or the other – Babylon or Christ’s bride. However, when there are two wives, that means that there’s a struggle between the two, and that means it is the process of someone being dragged to the knowledge of the truth. In this case, the son of the hated wife, which is Babylon, gets the double portion, and that double portion is judgment.

Rev 18:1  And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Rev 18:2  And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Rev 18:3  For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Rev 18:4  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
Rev 18:5  For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Rev 18:6  Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Rev 18:7  How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
Rev 18:8  Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

The double portion in judgment means that the son of the hated wife, the flesh, gets his reward, and in him getting his reward the mother is also honored.

1Ki 2:19  Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
1Ki 2:20  Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.

The mother of the honored son gets a reward, and the son gets a reward, too, – double. As Bathsheba was given her own seat next to her son, so Babylon partakes of the honor of the son vicariously. This principle is applied in judgment. Also, it is the two witnesses against whatever comes from Babylon, and her power, the son. When the son, who is king of the woman, is judged, the woman is judged or honored. Also, we must not forget that it is an honor to be judged in this eon. This principle is laid out in the following verses when we realize that a city represents a woman.

Deu 20:16  But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
Deu 20:17  But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:
Deu 20:18  That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.

As we read earlier in Revelation 18, the woman is to be judged, and given a double portion of judgment. That double portion means that not only is she judged and desolated, so too, all that comes from her. All that she thought was “dainty and goodly” is taken from her. All that she thought was good and honorable is taken away in judgment and all that is left is a rotting corpse.

Rev 18:14  And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

When it is said in this verse that all which she lusted after, all that she thought was dainty and goodly, is departed from her and found no more at all. This is a good thing, because in this judgment we are seeing that all we thought we knew about God while in the flesh, all that our son gave us in honor through, the flesh, in religious practices, is seen as filth.

Jer 24:1  The LORD shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the LORD, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
Jer 24:2  One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
Jer 24:3  Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
Jer 24:4  Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Jer 24:5  Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good.
Jer 24:6  For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up.
Jer 24:7  And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.
Jer 24:8  And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
Jer 24:9  And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.
Jer 24:10  And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.

These fruits, which are speaking of literal people, are us. They are not two different people, but the old man and the new man. All that we thought we were through religion is evil and cannot be eaten, but that which comes from the trials of seeing your religion as evil brings forth good fruit in the new man. As Esau was the first born and was removed, and as Ishmael was the first born and removed, so, too, our old man must be rewarded double in his judgment. All that comes from the hated wife, the Jerusalem from beneath, from our earth which is the hated wife and all that comes from our loved wife, Jerusalem that is from above, comes from our new man, Christ. As the evil fruit is evil and cannot be eaten because it’s so evil, so are we in the flesh. The word “evil” in verse three of Jeremiah 24 is the same word “naughty” in verse one and means:

This tells us that all that is in us as the first born of the hated wife must be destroyed and judged double. Not only are we judged in the flesh by the law of the flesh…

We are not only judged once outwardly by the law of the flesh, but inwardly by the law of the spirit.

Rom 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:3  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

We cannot partake of the quickening of our mortal bodies by the spirit of God until we have been judged in the flesh and shown all that comes from the flesh, no matter how good it may seem, is rotten fruit. We are so deceived by the law of the flesh, we think that rotten fruit applies only to adultery, fornication, lying, stealing, etc., but even the deeds we do that are good to the flesh are rotten and evil because they come from an evil heart that does not know God but are the deeds of the firstborn Adam.

Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Depart from me, you that WORK INIQUITY, self-righteousness.

Eze 33:13  When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

We cannot rob the firstborn of his rights to the double portion, and that inheritance is a double judgment. Stopping at a ten-second sinner’s prayer is as far as the first Adam can go. From there he justifies himself through religious works and spits on the truth that his life is a creation of God through Christ and there is nothing he can do to perfect himself. As Romans 8:11 said, we cannot quicken or bring to life ourselves.  Only the spirit of God that resurrected Christ from the dead can quicken or give life. We cannot do it ourselves. All that religion teaches us that is dainty and goodly is a lie because it’s all in the basket; the flesh filled with evil fruit. Unless we are judged in the flesh and spirit, we have no part in the body of Christ. Outward judgment is not enough. The religious Pharisee in me has already done that and all it produced was “iniquity”, self-righteous puffed up foreheads.

Jer 3:1  They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
Jer 3:2  Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
Jer 3:3  Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.
Jer 3:4  Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
Jer 3:5  Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

These verses describe the double portion that we, as the elect must partake of, the double judgment. It is good that He has chastised us through judgment and is in the process of delivering our new man from the hated wife.

Psa 119:57  CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.
Psa 119:58  I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.
Psa 119:59  I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
Psa 119:60  I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.
Psa 119:61  The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.
Psa 119:62  At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.
Psa 119:63  I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.
Psa 119:64  The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.
Psa 119:65  TETH. Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word.
Psa 119:66  Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
Psa 119:67  Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.
