Deu 20:5-9 Who Are the Officers Who Speak to the People?

[Study Aired October 12, 2020]

Deu 20:5  And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
Deu 20:6  And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
Deu 20:7  And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Deu 20:8  And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.
Deu 20:9  And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

Last week we covered verses 1-4 in chapter 20. Today we will cover verses 5-9, and, LORD willing, we will understand who the officers are who are directed to separate the various people excluded from the battle. First, we must see who or what is an officer.

Active participle of an otherwise unused root probably meaning to write; properly a scribe, that is, (by analogy or implication) an official superintendent or magistrate: – officer, overseer, ruler.
Total KJV occurrences: 25

A scribe is someone writes down and voices the will of the King.

2Ki 22:10  And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
2Ki 22:11  And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
2Ki 22:12  And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king’s, saying,
2Ki 22:13  Go ye, enquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

From these verses we can see that an officer is to direct the words of the king to the people of the land. Who or what is this typification described for us today who are the true Israel of God and who are being directed everyday?

Joh 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 14:18  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The Spirit of the Father was in Christ, and that same spirit is in us. The spirit searches our hearts and makes known to us what we are made of and allows us to partake of and understand the Father and to partake of the promises. The spirit of God searches our hearts and reveals to us our weaknesses and where we are not ready to battle.

Rom 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The spirit of God is the words of God which were in the mouth of Christ. These same words are life to us in the areas of our life where they are received. In some areas of our life, the flesh is still resisting and is as the man who has built a house, a vineyard, has a new wife or is scared of the battle.

Joh 6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2  The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5  And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

This same word of life comforts us from the trials of life as it did Christ. As His Father’s words were a comfort to Him in the flesh, so Christ’s words are a comfort to us, because those words bring life in the light of their truth.

Joh 16:7  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Joh 16:8  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Joh 16:9  Of sin, because they believe not on me; [sin – singular, unbelief, self-righteousness, iniquity]
Joh 16:10  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; [no man has ascended to heaven but he has descended from heaven, (Joh 3:13)]
Joh 16:11  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. [This is when Satan falls from our heavens (Luk 10:18)]
Joh 16:12  I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Joh 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Joh 16:14  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Joh 16:15  All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Before the spirit of truth has come to us, Satan rules the old man, our flesh, through the false doctrine of freewill. We are bound by a carnal mind, and that carnal mind is the mind of the flesh’s father, Satan. That carnal mind speaks words of death, not life, because the carnal mind is opposite of the spirit of truth because the carnal mind speaks about himself, his will, his glory.

The prince of this world speaks words of death to his people, not life. Because all he speaks is about himself and when his children speak the same thing, they show that they are of him. Watch the layout of the following verse. First, we see the flesh is of Satan, the fruit of that truth is a lie. It is a lie because it speaks about itself as if it is the creator, “Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil”, Gen 3:5.

Joh 8:44  Ye are of your father the devil [number 1], and the lusts of your father ye will do [number 2]. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him [number 3]. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own [number 4] He speaks of his own works, and we do the same thing, which verifies we are his children by speaking of our own, number 1 – “You are of your father the devil.”]: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

When we speak of our own, we become murderers just as our father the devil is because speaking of our own is what crucified Christ. We hate Christ, because we hate the truth that we are not free moral agents carving out our own destiny through good or evil choices which are made independently and separately from the Creator.

This doctrine is anti- to our christ which we have made for ourselves. Christ is the anti-christ to the world’s messiah and is why we hate Him in our flesh. We would rather a man rule over us and call him president, king, lord, than to say and confess “…it is not him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God…”, it is all of God through Christ and this doctrine is ANTI, to the world’s christ.

Rom 9:16  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

These words we are reading are being spoken to us by the Officer, Who has been sent to show us truth in our world, in our earth. These truths shine the light of the truth that there is but One Creator (of Whom we are not) into the unformed earth we call our bodies, and our world is lit up. Each day that light shines brighter and brighter and exposes what has been hid den by the darkness of the lies by which we were held.

However, the comforter comes to us and shows us what we cannot know in the flesh because it speaks of Christ and not to glorify our flesh. This is contrary to what we have known and is a hard thing to receive, for when you receive it, it means you must die and Christ is resurrected from the earth that He was buried in and reigns over your world. He is resurrected from the earth, which we are, and walks the world in us who crucified Him, exposing the areas of our life where we are still believing we are gods.

Num 11:16  And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
Num 11:17  And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

This verse shows us who the officers are. First, the number seven means complete, and when multiplied by 10, signifies the completion of the flesh, by the number 70. What this verse is speaking of is Christ in us and His complete doctrine in us. It is not alluding to seventy separate men, but one complete truth that goes through our lives separating truth from error. See studies on the numbers: The Number Seven
The Number Ten.

The men who are not to go to war are those men who are still taken by the cares of the world. Each example in these verses of Deuteronomy 20:5-8 is speaking of those areas of our lives that are still not committed to the truth and after which our hearts are still lusting. In the flesh we don’t see this truth because we see it as a way for the man to enjoy the things God has given him in the flesh, and that’s all he sees.

The man of God sees that these things are all spiritual and that the message is spiritual and not carnal. He sees the new house as a new dwelling that he has built for himself in which to rest. He sees that the new vineyard is what he thinks he has planted, and he still wants to eat the fruit of his own hand.

The new wife is the new doctrine I am pleasuring myself with. and they all culminate with the whole, the number 4, the faint of heart. We were given a new testament example of these things in Matthew 13 when Christ spoke the same thing about four other men, which are not four but one whole man and the progression of change. This time, however, the whole ends up in a positive light, because this parable is speaking of the progression of the new man and not the old man.

Mat 13:3  And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
Mat 13:4  And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
Mat 13:5  Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
Mat 13:6  And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
Mat 13:7  And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
Mat 13:8  But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
Mat 13:9  Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

These grounds are not four different grounds, as the four different men in Deuteronomy are not four different men. They are speaking of the whole man, and when we read the next few verses we will see this truth come out more and more clearly.

Mat 13:18  Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
Mat 13:19  When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Mat 13:20  But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
Mat 13:21  Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
Mat 13:22  He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Mat 13:23  But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

It was easier for me to receive the truth that God is, was and will be Sovereign over my good works and that they are not mine but His. HOWEVER, my evil works, oh no, I felt those came from me. God surely did not make me do evil! That to me was blasphemy and the very ANTI of the christ I had been taught. I could receive He made me do good works because those good works glorified me as a GOOD PERSON. I could parade around and distinguish myself from others because they still did bad works and mine were good. They were evil, and I was good.

Calvinism was the great harlot that taught me this doctrine of them and me. When it came to evil deeds, however, those were mine and all mine. Christ does not make us drunkards and liars; no that’s ours (or so I thought). You see how we shrink back from that war? Do you see how we want to rest in the new false doctrine house of ‘once saved always saved’, of eating of our own good fruits and pleasuring ourselves with this new wife? Do you see how it makes us cowards from facing the true enemy of the flesh, GOD. The Spirit of God is the words of truth that Christ used to expose the Pharisee 2000 years ago and is still exposing in me today. We do not want to face God because we are coming to see…”The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name” (Exo 15:3).

He will not suffer us to lay back and feed off Him willy-nilly. Everything is a war, everything is a fight, and everything is trial. Nothing is given to us, we fight the flesh and the carnal mind until they submit to the truth that God is the All in all, the King of kings, and we are His creations in Christ.

Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

It is a battle, the battle of all ages, for the flesh to submit to this doctrine of truth. In fact, it is literally impossible, and that is why it takes a new creation to be created to accept this truth. No one can accept the truth that God is Supreme God over ALL things and over ALL people.

Pro 16:4  The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Having this truth is the very weapon we use to combat the world in us and the world out there that is governed by the prince of darkness. This truth frees me from the darkness that has held me in bondage to my own flesh by the lying, murderous doctrine of Satan that I was my own god.

The next set of verses brings this truth out very clearly when you see that they are speaking to you and to me, to our flesh, not those bad people ‘out there’, not to other religions, but to us personally. Today there still exists in me that which must be put to death and be warred against. Every word is speaking to us, right now, today, for today is the day of salvation somewhere within us, that needs to be freed from false doctrine.

Jer 5:1  Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
Jer 5:2  And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.
Jer 5:3  O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
Jer 5:4  Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
Jer 5:5  I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
Jer 5:6  Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
Jer 5:7  How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
Jer 5:8  They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.
Jer 5:9  Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Jer 5:10  Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S.
Jer 5:11  For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.
Jer 5:12  They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
Jer 5:13  And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

Once we begin to see and to hear the truth, the enemy of my flesh, GOD, comes upon me with a vengeance I have never known and with an earthquake (Rev 16:18 ) so powerful my world has never experienced it. As we feel this judgment upon us, as we read these words, let’s remember: if we are not judged in this life, we will have to do it in the lake of fire. Judgment is upon us, the house of God (1Pe 4:17). The heavens are being purified,(Heb 9:23) by a fervent heat (2Pe 3:10-12) NOW!

Jer 5:14  Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
Jer 5:15  Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
Jer 5:16  Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.
Jer 5:17  And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
Jer 5:18  Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
Jer 5:19  And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
Jer 5:20  Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
Jer 5:21  Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
Jer 5:22  Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Jer 5:23  But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
Jer 5:24  Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
Jer 5:25  Your iniquities (Eze 33:13) have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
Jer 5:26  For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
Jer 5:27  As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
Jer 5:28  They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
Jer 5:29  Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Jer 5:30  A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
Jer 5:31  The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

We should never think that these words are being spoken of others, for they are spoken to us. These words CANNOT BE HEARD OR SEEN by other than the body of Christ. We love false doctrine, we love to have our ears tickled with praise and the newest doctrine, the newest thing. The truth, the truest thing we can ever grasp, is that judgment is upon us, and we are blessed to be judged. Our flesh shrinks back, our minds say, “Oh no, not me! I’m not that bad.” Nevertheless the very war we are reading about today is the war on the old man within us. The ‘Officer’ is the Spirit of God that will expose the coward in us and the man trying to eat of what he has planted and built. In the flesh we read this as a good thing to be kept from the war, but God is a man of war. If we are made in His image, or are being made in His image, then we are to run to the war, just as king David did when facing the giant Goliath.

1Sa 17:48  And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

We are to run to the battle, because the LORD will deliver the Goliath that is our flesh to the sword, to the word of God that will decapitate the giant and free us from the lie of freewill and that we are our own god. Praise God for this great mercy He has granted us, to make us men of war and teach us how to battle.

Jdg 3:2  Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

May we learn how to battle the man in us and not faint back from confessing that we are no god of our own freewill, but we are a god in whom God is creating the knowledge of the truth.

Joh 10:34  Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
Joh 10:35  If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
Joh 10:36  Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
