Deu 13:5-18 The LORD Takes Worshiping Other Gods Seriously!

[Study Aired December 13, 2019]

Deu 13:5  And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Deu 13:6  If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
Deu 13:7  Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
Deu 13:8  Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:
Deu 13:9  But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
Deu 13:10  And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deu 13:11  And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
Deu 13:12  If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
Deu 13:13  Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
Deu 13:14  Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
Deu 13:15  Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
Deu 13:16  And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.
Deu 13:17  And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;
Deu 13:18  When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.

Two weeks ago we covered verses 1-5 of Deuteronomy 13 and were shown how following other gods, which we have not known, is worshiping ourselves instead of God. In the following study last week we discussed what was repentance. Today we will be covering how to deal with the prophet, your brother, your daughter, wife or friend if they entice you to go after other gods which you have not known and "turn" you from the God which redeemed you out of the house of bondage. Now, we must first actually try to see that the LORD takes worshiping other gods so seriously that He was asking those people to LITERALLY kill anyone who enticed them to go after other gods.

In fact, if you were the one enticed, you were to be the FIRST to lay hands on the offender to put them to death. This was including your own physical mother, daughter, brother, best friend or wife. You were to be the one to throw the first stone to stone them to death. So, this is very serious to God and not to be taken lightly. Many people have been stoned to death for breaking this law. Lives have been lost for breaking this law. Then He takes it a step further and says, "If people of a city go after other gods, then not only are they to be killed, but the whole town killed and everything they possessed burned in a fire." Can you imagine a group of people coming to your little town and saying, "We know people from your town have worshiped other gods and have inquired of other gods, so we are going to kill them and everyone in this town, and we are going to burn it to the ground."?

This happens literally in the Middle East still today. This is what Isis was doing in Iraq and Syria. Today the world calls them terrorists, blood thirsty mobs of religious zealots. If the Israelites today acted out literally what they were commanded by God back then in our society today, the world would do to them what they have done to terrorists. God has given whole countries over to slaughter because of idol worship. Look at Iraq today. Thousands of what are called Coptic Christians were slaughtered and beheaded. Why did God allow it? Because of this commandment today, they worshiped and went after strange gods.  So, God takes this subject very seriously. We know these things were written for our admonition and learning.

1Co 10:11  Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

They naturally lived out their lives for us to spiritually learn from. God does not want us, in this eon, to act these things out literally, but spiritually. We are to see those "sons of belial" within us and within the body of Christ. We must all be circumspect about watching for false prophets. We must all guard our hearts and the body of Christ from false doctrines and false prophets, who come in to turn us from the true God Who has redeemed us from the land of bondage and translated us into the kingdom of His Son.

Col 1:13  Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Col 1:14  In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

This deliverance and redemption comes only from the God of our LORD Jesus Christ and none other. We are the recipients of this gift if we hold fast this profession and no other.

Heb 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Heb 10:23  Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

False prophets are easy to discover because they will try to get us to lean to our own understanding. They will try to get us to see something that is "a secret" that only they have. The people will lean to older manuscripts, newer manuscripts, literal Jewish teachings from other books, etc that can be spiritually united with what we have been given or even to angels.  Some will be speaking about angels and puffing them up into something they are not, causing our minds to venture into things that are not written. This is very subtle, very slow, but it takes place.

Gal 2:4  And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage

There is the reason they are sent - to bring us back into bondage. Satan wants to rule us; he wants to have the preeminence. He does not want us to see Christ as the only preeminence.

3Jn 1:9  I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

Col 1:15  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col 1:20  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Col 1:21  And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Col 1:22  In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
Col 1:23  If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Satan appears as an angel of light, but he is really an angel of the light of darkness. His ministers appear as the same. They appear to have knowledge, they appear to be wise, they appear to believe what we believe, but their words will reveal who they are. They are "continent" about the grace of God, which we will cover in a minute.

2Co 11:12  But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
2Co 11:13  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
2Co 11:14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2Co 11:15  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

There are legions of angels, foul spirits sent from the hand of God through Satan, to try us. We are surrounded daily, hourly and minute by minute by evil spirits that want to lure us away from the hope we have by TRUSTING IN OURSELVES, and in doing so they bring us right back into bondage. We are given story after story of how the literal Israelites were delivered from one bondage only to be taken by another.

1Co 10:7  Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Exo 32:1  And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
Exo 32:2  And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
Exo 32:3  And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
Exo 32:4  And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Exo 32:5  And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
Exo 32:6  And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

They were sacrificed FOR US, and in every instance it was because they followed after other gods. There is no doubt this is exactly what happened in the last group of people who left our fellowship. It was a failed attempt to overthrow the true gospel and mix it with flesh. Now look at what else those who have been snared by this doctrine of demons is listening to; no literal return of Christ, no literal anything, all is spiritual, there is no physical anything. It crept in without us even knowing it until it was too late, and they were dragged off into darkness by this demonic doctrine. This was ordained by God, orchestrated by His hand, Satan, whom God used to bring about a cleansing of His elect. They were sacrificed for us, the elect of God, whom Christ has kept by His power from being deceived.

Jud 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Jud 1:4  For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

First, what are we saved from? What is the common salvation? We are saved from Death, not a literal burning hell which will punish the unbelievers for all of eternity without end. After that we are told to earnestly "CONTEND" for the faith of this common salvation that was "ONCE" delivered to the saints. What is Jude telling us by saying we must earnestly contend for the faith. Earnestly contending for the faith is making sure we do not add to or take away from what Christ has delivered us. False doctrine will always add to the word of God or take from the word of God. Scripture says Christ is the Creator of all things and all things consist by Him (Col 1:16-17). False doctrine says that we were created, placed on the planet earth and given individual free will to find God on our own and what we find or do not find is of our making, despite what we have just read in Colossians. Here is an example out of scripture:

Gal 3:1  O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Gal 3:2  This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Gal 3:3  Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal 3:4  Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Gal 3:5  He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Gal 4:8  Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Gal 4:9  But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Gal 4:10  Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
Gal 4:11  I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
Gal 4:12  Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

Gal 4:17  They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

Gal 5:1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Gal 5:2  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
Gal 5:3  For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
Gal 5:4  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

False doctrine leads us to be "continent", the word I said earlier we would examine. I am going to say something obvious to make a whole picture in my mind's eye. Continence is the opposite of "incontinent". So, what is "incontinent"?

If "incontinent" means we have no control over ourselves, then "continence" means we do have control over ourselves. The religions of the world, no matter what religion, no matter what gods are being served, all have one thing in common. They all teach we have continence over our actions. I bring all of this out to cover one word in scripture, and that word is "Lasciviousness". After the scripture I will post the definition for the word.

Jud 1:4  For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The spiritual definition of the word "lasciviousness" is being "incontinent" by your "continence", unrestrained in your religious practices. The incontinent is the way they see God, they are unrestrained in their lust to be as God, which in turn restrains them from the truth. They see Him as a watcher over things and as an overseer but not as being directly and intimately involved in every minute detail of every life. Religion teaches us the false doctrine of free will and therefore says, by their doctrinal beliefs, that, "We as humans have some power to be gods over the little things of OUR lives and need not bother God, Who is busy, with major things." Religion teaches as we read in Galatians, that we must do things, independent and separate from God, to get in and stay in right standing with God. Religion is "incontinent" and unable to control their lust for all types of other gods and angelic thoughts and therefore deny the freedom we have in Christ. Religion teaches works of the flesh, which is the anti-type of the works of God in Christ, and by doing so are "lascivious" towards their Creator. By lusting after "laws, holy days, holidays, sabbaths, ceremonies, and traditions", they have become the very thing they accuse us of being - lascivious. In the flesh without eyes to see, they/we cannot control our carnal mind from lusting after other ways to worship God.

Jud 1:5  I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
Jud 1:6  And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. [This verse is not talking about literal angels, but about those who left the lineage of Seth and mixed with the lineage of Cain. This is talking about the Sons of God (the line of Seth) mixing with the daughters of men (the line of Cain). Gen 6:1-5]
Jud 1:7  Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal [Greek: aiōnios, age-lasting] fire.
Jud 1:8  Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

About four years ago I was explaining to one of my relatives about what scripture says. Their immediate response was "incontinent", "You just want to make a excuse for your sin and be able to drink and live without restraint." This is exactly what we read in Galatians 2:4, "...who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage". This is the meaning of Jude 1:4 where we are told that they are turning what we believe about Christ, "turning the grace of God into lasciviousness". This is why verse 3 told us to "earnestly contend for the faith". When my relative told me I just wanted to make a way to live a loose life, they were saying that the truth I believe is "incontinent" to their truth of self-restrained "continence". They were, without knowing it, being used by evil spirits to try me and bring me back into bondage to religion with all its holidays and ceremonies. They are being incontinent by their continents about the truth.

Jud 1:16  These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

This is the point of their incontinence. In the flesh, we cannot contain our urge to gratify our flesh with honor when worshiping God. We cannot but look for other ways to worship the god that inhabits our temple, the man of sin. We may outwardly look religious, but inwardly we are worshiping ourselves. We may get water baptized, do ceremonies where we "dedicate" our lives to God, but they are a show, a pretense, because we are really worshiping ourselves and the man of sin. Our verses today started off with how to deal with those who try and draw us away from the first commandment:

Deu 5:6  I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deu 5:7  Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

This study has led us to know how to identify those who are trying to lead us from the first commandment. They are unrestrained in their fleshly, carnal-minded practices that amount to nothing. They make the outside look good, but the inside is filthy and full of lusts and lasciviousness against God. The flesh hates Christ to its core because the flesh is wanton against Christ. The flesh has no control and is unrestrained in its lust to take the glory of God and turn it into the glory of man. The way we put it to death and all those who come to us trying to drag us back into bondage is to stone them. Not literally, but with The Stone, The Stone of stumbling, that is Christ.

1Pe 2:3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
1Pe 2:4  To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
1Pe 2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
1Pe 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
1Pe 2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1Pe 2:8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Scripture tells us that Christ is that stone, and when you go to the various scriptures which teach us we are dead in this world and are dead in sin, this truth kills all works of the flesh.  The flesh does not and cannot believe that it is dead and without power. However, if God grants us repentance from the man of sin and opens our eyes to see we are dead spiritually and nothing good is in us, we can be turned by the Hand of God into the liberty of the children of God.

Gal 5:1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

If they call the truth lasciviousness, then praise God for allowing you to be persecuted for the truth. I would rather be called lascivious then to be dragged back into the chains of keeping holidays, ceremonial rites, and having my conscience tormented by the countless false doctrines of the Devil. I would rather be separated from all to be united to The One.
