Deu 5:8-10 The Second Commandment

Deu 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Deu 5:9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
Deu 5:10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

What does it mean to make a "graven" image or "likeness"? Where is heaven above, earth beneath, and what are the waters beneath the earth? For the Elect scripture answers scripture, and all the answers to these questions are found in scripture itself. God does not tell us things and then leave it up to us to make the answers. He tells us exactly what He means.

Luk 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Luk 11:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Luk 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Luk 11:12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

We went over what a graven image was or any likeness was in the study on Deu 4:15-20. In that study the same word was translated 'similitude'. Below is a quick review of that word;

The definition shows that it means any portion or partial likeness of ANY KIND. This word is not just saying, "You did not see any image." It is saying, "You did not see any partial likeness of any kind that resembles The LORD God." This is significant in two ways. One, in the literal no man can see the LORD God in ANY WAY, that will lead Him to be able to make a partial, smallest image of God in any way, that will lead him as a literal fleshly being to worship God IN TRUTH.
Let me say this again. No man can see God in the slightest form, spiritually or physically, while still in the fleshly first Adam and worship God with clarity and truth. No man, in either song, poem, riddle, vision or dream can intelligently and in truth worship God without God Himself revealing Himself to that person through His WORD. If any person were able to see the LORD God in the MINUTEST, SLIGHTEST FORM, separate from His WORD, he could claim that there was something in mankind that could see God separate and independent from God Himself. That man can reach God and know His thoughts WITHOUT THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN CHRIST (Rom 8:9), Who opens our eyes. And if that is the case, then all religious claims that they know God could have truth to them. However, this is the lie of the man of sin and the reason we have countless gods and religions in the world. Now let's read some verses that use this word 'similitude' or its other translated words;"

Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Job 4:16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

Num 12:8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

"Each one of these verses brings out the definition of the word in discussion. Also, each one of these verses either warns of trying to make an image of God or the speaker has been blessed by God to see what He was speaking, which is an image. Seeing something of TRUTH and KNOWING what you have seen in truth is a gift from God. It is not something a person can accomplish on his own separately and independently from God as a mere man. This takes us to the most controversial statement that we claim, "We, the Elect, are the Body of Christ, which is the image of the God of scripture. We and we alone from the resurrection of our Head, Jesus Christ, along with all those who have ever known God in truth through the revelation of Jesus Christ, are the image that God has decided to show Himself to the world through." The Body of Christ, the church, will be the image, the similitude, and the likeness that will lead all men to truth in the lake of fire."

Col 1:15 Who is the IMAGE of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, THE CHURCH: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Eph 3:21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
Eph 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

"Let's put these three sets of scriptures together. Christ is the Image of God, The Father, and we are Christ's Body. It is through this Head does His Body reveal to the rest of mankind and spirits the manifold wisdom and plan of God. The Body of Christ, which includes all those who are now asleep in Christ that will one day be united as a whole Body and will be used by God the Father through The Head of the Body, Jesus Christ, to reveal Himself to His creation. No man or woman who has ever lived, who is not in this Body, has nor can, see God as He is, was and will be. They cannot see any likeness, similitude or image of God without being enlightened by the mind of Christ."

"...in the flesh we see a god that only our carnal minds are given to see, a god that is like us and acts the way we do, talks the way we do and makes excuses for what we are in the flesh. It is a god of our carnal mind and his name is whatever our name is in the flesh. Scripture calls him the man of sin, which is me, you and every other human that has ever walked this earth. The scripture says that we saw no similitude, and this goes much deeper than just making a physical carving or statue. When we imagine what we will say to others in a situation, what they will say to us, then our response to them, we are making a similitude.

Because we do not know the future and cannot plan out the responses of others or our own responses. When we put ourselves in this back and forth in our minds about our responses, basically arguing with ourselves, and IMAGINING the conversation or events, we are making an IMAGE, the root for imagining, of God. Imagining an event or conversation and the way it will play out is making yourself God and directing the future, an impossibility for any human to do. Even if the imagining is for the natural good of others or for myself, it's still corruption from a carnal mind that is enmity against God (Rom 8:)."

So we have a good grasp on the words in discussion and what it means to make an image. So now we must ask the questions: where is heaven above, earth beneath, and what are the waters beneath the earth? There is too much in these three questions for one study, so we will take the time to study each one and then put them into prospective to making a graven image of them. Mike did a study on where heaven is, and I believe it is essential for us to touch on that study to get a deeper understanding of making a graven image of it. So here is the last part of that study:

Having a good grasp on what a "similitude and graven image" is and where heaven is, we can now move on to say that to form any image of God outside the image of the LORD Jesus Christ, as He has revealed Himself to the church, is making a graven image of something we have carnally formed in our minds. To imagine that God is anything that we imagine in our minds, without the Spirit of God revealing it to us through the church, is making a graven image and breaking the second commandment. God has commanded us not to make an image of Him because we do not know, in the flesh, Who He is or how to express Who He is. Because He is inexpressible by the flesh. But He is not under that same law which we are given by the Law giver, because all things are subject TO HIM, not Him to them. Therefore He has made an image of Himself in Christ, the image by which we are to worship Him.

Col 1:3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
Col 1:15 Who is the IMAGE of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

So the commandment not to make an image of Him is to us because He has revealed Himself to us in The IMAGE He has created of Himself, whereby we are to Worship Him. For there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved;

Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

And it is through this name do we have access into His presence;

Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Also, it is by this name of the Image of the invisible God we speak to Him. There is no other name whereby God hears our words.

Joh 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Joh 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

To sum it up, we should realize that to have or to speak about God WITHOUT the knowledge of Who Christ is and that He is the express image of His Father is to make a graven image that is detestable to God the Father. To imagine ANYTHING about God without seeing it through the eyes of the Son is an abomination and a lie, as simple as that. To think God can be seen from the imaginations of our fleshly minds (heavens), from our fleshly bodies (earth), or from the word of God being twisted by the church (the waters beneath the earth), is an abomination to God. He is our God, and He is a jealous God.

He will not allow us to continue to worship false thoughts in our heavens, in our earth or even the way we have twisted His word under our earth. No, He exacts vengence upon our carnal minds until He shapes them into what He has predestined. He is vengeful to our "children" - doctrines which we have born from our original (father) doctrines unto the complete end, fourth generation, by the process of judgment, third generation. Then He shows mercy to thousands of children's children's doctrines which we have borne in His name by His Seed, Jesus Christ. There is so much to learn, and each new learning is a child from our Father. We grow more and more in numbers, colors, metals and wisdom in all things, which represent children of our God. These are the thousands to whom He shows mercy because these doctrines love Him and not themselves.

Next week, LORD willing, we will study the images beneath the earth and the waters beneath the earth.

Deu 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
